Scientific Name: Peganum Harmala
Common Name: Syrian Rue, Asian Rue, Harmala, Harjala
Origin: India
Syrian or Asian rue, known locally as harmala or harjala, is a-small bushy desert shrub. It grows to a height of about half-metre, has leaves cut into long, narrow segments, and produces-small, white flowers. Though native only to Central Asia and-Syria, it now grows in the wild along the Mediterranean coasts of-Europe, Asia, and Africa. It was used for dyes in Persian and-Turkish rugs, but it was the psychoactive effects of its bitter-seeds that gained it esteem from Asia Minor, across to India and-Northeast Tibet, as a medication and a love potion. According to-one theory, harmala was the ''Huorma'' or ''Soma'', which was the-base of the ''Drink of the Immortals'' in ancient Persia. Syrian Rue Seeds act as an MAO inhibitor. Syrian rue seeds contain harmine and harmaline.
